性狀：液體，有吸濕性。在軟水、硬水、鹽、堿和酸性溶液中都很穩定。在貯存時可能變渾濁，但加熱至40°C即能澄清。能與水混溶，溶液呈中性，溶于極性有機溶劑。有刺激性。是一種非離子型表面活性劑。清潔劑。潤化劑。乳化劑。
生物學應用：
NP40是一種非離子型表面活性劑，是動物細胞常用的裂解液。在免疫沉淀中所用的抗體是識別構像的表位時使用NP40裂解液。如果抗體是識別線性抗原表位（如合成肽）則可使用強變性裂解液（如RIPA裂解液）。
