用途：pH指示劑，pH=3.0時呈黃色，pH=4.6時呈藍紫色。酸堿指示劑；非水滴定用指示劑，蛋白電泳染色；病毒化驗等。

配置方法

方法1：1%的溴酚藍
將托盤天平上稱取1g溴酚藍定溶于100ml無水乙醇中，轉移入滴瓶中，貼標簽備用。
方法2：0.05%的溴酚藍
配western blot用的2*SDS上樣緩沖液需要用到0.1%的溴酚藍，2-DE中溴酚藍一般也是配成0.1%母液。實際上，溴酚藍在水中的溶解度不高，直接將0.1g溴酚藍溶于100ml水是有困難的。下面是其較合適的配制方法：
0.05%的溴酚藍配制方法：取溴酚藍0.1g，加0.05mol/L氫氧化鈉溶液3.0ml使溶解，再加水稀釋至200ml，即得。 變色范圍pH2.8～4.6（黃→藍綠）。
方法3：1%溴酚藍
加1g水溶性鈉型溴酚藍于100ml水中，攪拌或渦旋混合直到完全溶解。溴酚藍其鈉鹽易溶解在水里。
