糖原染色是病理學中常規的染色方法之一，McManus在1946年最先使用高碘酸-雪夫技術顯示黏蛋白，該法常用來顯示糖原和其他多糖，該染色液不僅能夠顯示糖原，還能顯示中性黏液性物質和某些酸性物質，以及軟骨、垂體、霉菌、真菌、色素、淀粉樣物質、基底膜等。  

     PAS染液（Periodic Acid-Schiff stain）在組織學上，主要用來檢測組織中的糖原或其他多糖物質。高碘酸是一種氧化劑，能將多糖分子中相鄰的二醇基氧化成二醛基，醛基能與希夫試劑（Schiff reagent）反應生成紅色不溶性復合物。
